Hi-Fi Rush is a rhythm-action game developed by Tango Gameworks, surprise-released in January 2023 to strong critical acclaim for its music-synced combat and stylized cel-shaded presentation. Players control Chai, a wannabe rockstar whose botched cybernetic implant syncs his entire world — combat, platforming, and environments — to the beat of the game's licensed and original soundtrack.
Combat rewards players for landing hits on the beat, layering combo variety across Chai's team of allies while dodging and parrying enemy attacks that are themselves telegraphed rhythmically. Beyond the 12-chapter story, the game hides collectible cassette tapes that unlock a fully playable Jukebox, along with optional Rekka Rooms that test combat mastery outside the main story flow.
Following its surprise launch, Hi-Fi Rush picked up nominations across major game awards shows and was later ported to PS5 and Steam after its initial Xbox/Game Pass exclusivity window, bringing its rhythm-driven combat to a wider audience.
