Steam App ID 242760.The Forest is a survival horror game developed by Endnight Games, released into full 1.0 in April 2018 after several years in Early Access. After a plane crash strands the player (and their son) on a mysterious peninsula, they must build shelter, craft tools, and survive against a population of cannibalistic mutants while unraveling the island's underground horror.
Base building is central to the experience, with a deep construction system spanning simple lean-tos to elaborate multi-story fortresses, alongside a crafting tree covering weapons, traps, and armor. The cave and bunker network beneath the island holds the game's story content and its scarcest resources, encouraging deep spelunking runs backed up by flares and molotovs.
The game's slow-burn companion system — building trust with the mutant Virginia — became one of its most memorable emergent features. Endnight followed up with a prequel, Sons of the Forest, in 2024, expanding the same survival-horror formula with new mechanics.
